Food As Pharmacy?

Let’s start at the beginning…

If we’re in a garden, an orchard or a farm, laden with the most beautiful and colourful fruits and vegetables – how do we identify them as? An apple, an orange, a perfectly round watermelon, a ripe juicy mango, fresh lady fingers or a big beautiful baingan.

Do we say – Hey that’s vitamin A and that’s Folic acid and that’s Calcium on the tree right there? No, right? Because that’s what nature intended for us. To see it as a whole.

As a next step…

If there was one word that you can use to describe Food, what would it be?

Your favourite dish or maybe a preferred restaurant.

Correct?

Would you ever think of words that convey some numbers? Or names of minerals?

Most probably not!

We rarely think of food in terms of information or data, as an association, when it comes to food. Information means data or numbers or reams of text (an input) to create something else (an output).

Yet is food information? If yes, what does this information translate into? What happens to the food in our body? What does it do in our body? Or does our body do something to the food?

Let’s delve a little deeper to understand this…

1. Eating 3 bananas a day gives us strong bones
a) Right b) Wrong

2. Eating a spoonful of soaked methi seeds in the morning gives us glowing skin
a) Right b) Wrong

3. Having a spoonful of coconut oil in the morning works as a great laxative
a) Right b) Wrong

4. Drinking ajwain water in the morning is good for the hair
a) Right b) Wrong

5. Drinking warm haldi water in the morning is good for the immunity
a) Right b) Wrong

You are right if you answered “wrong” to each of the above. Surprised? Why? You may ask. Everyone I know does it - this is just like taking Vitamin E supplements for good hair or Vitamin C capsules for enhanced immunity or curcumin tablets as an anti-inflammatory.

Yet, is it really the same? Are medicines a substitute for food or the other way round? Maybe it’s time to understand clearly and deeply what food and the role of food is currently perceived to be and what it really is.

Let’s step into this Open House on “Food as Pharmacy” and understand this concept.
