Imagine.
In a few years or decades from now when you are celebrating your 75th birthday. How would you feel? Excited? Or Anxious? Most would be fearful at the thought of turning 75 years old! Yet, is the fear really (1) the number “75” on the cake or the balloons or (2) what we assume comes with being 75 years old? That one wouldn’t be able to hear everyone sing for them or see everyone clearly or might need a stick to stand – worse still, be wheelchair bound. And when someone comes to greet them, they might not be able to remember their name or face. They might not be able to partake in all the goodies on the table or indulge as they once did. Or that they are conscious of their thinning hair and saggingskin when posing for family photographs.
For most, it’s all the fears in the second bucket.
So, what IS Ageing?
Is Ageing internal or external? Or is it both?
How does Ageing change our body?
And why does it change? Can it be reversed? Or stopped?
Why do some people age faster than others? And why do some age better?
Does our body and its internal intelligence have a role to play?
Does the body understand Ageing? Does it support us?
Do we unwittingly add to our ageing or are there some things that we do that help us remain young?
If we look at Nature – we see ageing prevalent in all living forms. Look at the trees, for example, that have withstood the vagaries of nature itself and survived - for hundreds of years. They may be gnarled and wrinkled. Twisted and turned but they are beautiful and grand, proudly flaunting their age and we love them for it. We are awed and comforted by them.
If ageing is a natural and an inevitable process that each of us have to go through, then let’s step inside this Open House on Ageing, to understand it better, so that we may be able to embrace “growing old” and can happily raise a toast to our glorious years with pride and without fear!
Old Age, Ageing & Elderly - Moving Milestones, is from the last face-face Open House of Feb 2020- just before the lockdown.
Releasing this as the first for online subscription from THACs Open House Archives, feels just right!
